Singapore

Gardens, hawker food and a spotless skyline

Singapore is a compact, very clean city-state of gardens, hawker food and family attractions. Kenyans don't need a visa, but there are no non-stop flights from Kenya.

Best time to go
February–April is usually driest; it's warm and humid year-round.
Getting there
No non-stop flights from Kenya: connect via the Gulf, Addis Ababa or Istanbul, about 14–18 hours in total.
Ideal for
Families with children, food lovers, first trips to Asia and Asia multi-city holidays

Singapore is Asia made easy: a safe, spotless city-state with world-class family attractions and some of the best cheap food on earth, and Kenyan citizens don't need a visa. It's a long trip from Kenya, with no non-stop flights, but once you're there everything works. The metro is excellent, English is widely spoken and the city is small enough to cover in a few days.

Why visit

Few cities suit families better. Singapore also makes a smooth first step into Asia, and combines well with Malaysia, Thailand or Bali for a longer trip.

What to see and do

  • Gardens by the Bay: the Supertree Grove and the cooled Cloud Forest and Flower Dome
  • Marina Bay: the skyline, the waterfront promenade and the evening light shows
  • Sentosa Island: Universal Studios Singapore, the aquarium and beaches
  • Singapore Zoo and the Night Safari
  • Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam for temples, mosques, shophouses and shopping
  • Hawker centres: Singapore's hawker culture is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, so eat chicken rice, laksa and satay where locals do
  • Jewel Changi Airport and its huge indoor waterfall, even if you're only passing through

Best time to visit

Singapore is warm and humid all year, usually in the mid-20s to low 30s°C. February to April tends to be drier. The north-east monsoon brings more rain from about November to January, mostly in heavy afternoon showers that pass quickly. Malls and attractions are built for the climate, so there's no bad time to go.

Getting there from Mombasa and Nairobi

There are no non-stop flights from Kenya. Most travellers connect through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa or Istanbul, for a total journey of roughly 14–18 hours depending on the connection. From Mombasa, the Gulf carriers and Turkish Airlines' direct services make good starting points.

Entry rules for Kenyans

  • Kenya isn't on Singapore's list of visa-required countries, so Kenyan citizens can visit as tourists without applying for a visa. Your visit pass is issued on arrival.
  • Everyone must submit the free SG Arrival Card online within three days before arrival.
  • You need a valid yellow fever certificate if you've been in a yellow fever risk country, including Kenya, in the six days before arrival.
  • Check ICA's website before you travel, as rules can change.

Good to know

  • Littering, jaywalking and eating on the MRT bring fines; e-cigarettes and vapes are illegal.
  • Card and mobile payments are accepted almost everywhere.
  • Carry an umbrella and a light layer for strong air-conditioning.

Singapore: your questions

Do Kenyans need a visa for Singapore?

No. Kenya isn't on Singapore's list of visa-required countries, so Kenyan citizens can visit as tourists without applying for a visa in advance, and the visit pass is issued on arrival. You must submit the free SG Arrival Card online within three days before arriving, and carry a yellow fever certificate if travelling from Kenya. Check ICA's rules before you travel.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate to travel from Kenya to Singapore?

Yes. Singapore requires a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate from travellers who have been in a country with risk of yellow fever transmission, which includes Kenya, within six days before arrival. Without one you can be quarantined or refused entry. The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before travel, and the certificate is valid for life.

Are there direct flights from Nairobi to Singapore?

Not at present. Most Kenyan travellers connect through Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Addis Ababa or Istanbul, with a total journey time of roughly 14–18 hours depending on the connection. Booking both flights on a single ticket protects you if the first flight is delayed and you miss the connection.

How many days do you need in Singapore?

Four to five nights is ideal. Spend one day on Marina Bay and Gardens by the Bay, one on Sentosa or at Universal Studios, one in Chinatown, Little India and Kampong Glam, and an evening at the Night Safari. Singapore also combines well with Malaysia, Thailand or Bali for a longer Asia trip.

Is Singapore good for a family holiday?

It's one of the easiest family cities in the world: very safe and clean, with excellent public transport and attractions designed for children, from Universal Studios and the aquarium on Sentosa to the zoo and the Night Safari. Hawker centres keep meals quick and affordable, which matters with hungry children.

What laws should visitors know about in Singapore?

Singapore enforces its rules strictly. Littering, jaywalking and eating or drinking on the MRT can bring fines, selling chewing gum is banned, and e-cigarettes and vapes are illegal to buy, possess or use. Drug offences carry very severe penalties. Follow the rules and you'll find it a relaxed, welcoming city.
