Museums, souqs and desert seas around Doha

Qatar packs world-class museums, Souq Waqif and dunes that meet the sea into a short trip around Doha, about 5½–6 hours from Nairobi. Kenyans need a visa arranged in advance.

Best time to go
November–March; summer (May–September) is extremely hot.
Getting there
Qatar Airways flies non-stop from Nairobi in about 5½–6 hours; from Mombasa, connect via Nairobi or another hub.
Ideal for
Culture lovers, stopovers on longer trips, families and sports fans

Qatar is a short, polished Gulf break built around Doha: landmark museums, an atmospheric old souq and desert dunes that run down to the sea. It's about 5½–6 hours non-stop from Nairobi and on the same time as Kenya. Many Kenyan travellers enjoy it as a two- or three-night stopover on the way to Europe or Asia. Kenyan passport holders need a tourist visa, which we help you arrange before you fly.

Why visit

Doha is compact, safe and easy to get around by metro and taxi, so short stays feel full rather than rushed. The architecture is striking, the food scene is broad, and the desert is about an hour's drive from the city.

What to see and do

  • Museum of Islamic Art, designed by I. M. Pei, with views across the bay to the skyline
  • National Museum of Qatar, Jean Nouvel's building inspired by the desert rose crystal
  • Souq Waqif: spices, perfumes, falcons and evening cafés
  • The Corniche, a waterfront promenade for walking or cycling
  • Katara Cultural Village and The Pearl for galleries, beaches and marina dining
  • Desert safari to Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, where dunes meet the water

Best time to visit

November to March is the best time, with warm days and cool evenings that suit the desert and outdoor sightseeing. April and October are hot but manageable. From May to September, daytime heat and humidity are extreme, so visits focus on indoor attractions and evenings.

Getting there from Mombasa and Nairobi

From Nairobi: Qatar Airways flies non-stop to Doha in about 5½–6 hours.

From Mombasa: we'll check the current routing for your dates, usually via Nairobi or another Gulf hub.

Doha connects onwards to Europe, Asia and the Americas, which makes a stopover easy to add to a longer trip.

Visas for Kenyans

Kenya isn't on Qatar's visa-free list. Kenyan passport holders need a tourist visa, applied for online through the official Hayya platform before travel, and some visa categories also require a hotel booking. Visit Qatar lists a paid visa-on-arrival route for some nationalities, but applying in advance is the safer choice. Rules change, so check before you travel.

Good to know

  • Dress modestly in public: cover shoulders and knees in malls, souqs, museums and government buildings.
  • Alcohol is served only in licensed hotel venues.
  • The weekend is Friday and Saturday.
  • Health insurance that covers Qatar is strongly recommended.

Qatar: your questions

Do Kenyans need a visa for Qatar?

Yes. Kenya isn't on Qatar's visa-free list, so Kenyan passport holders need a tourist visa. You apply online through the official Hayya platform before travel, and some visa categories also need a hotel booking. Visit Qatar lists a paid visa-on-arrival route for some nationalities, but applying in advance is the safer choice. Check current rules before you travel.

How long is the flight from Nairobi to Doha?

Non-stop flights from Nairobi to Doha take roughly 5½–6 hours, and Doha is in the same time zone as Kenya, so there's no jet lag. Qatar Airways operates the route, and Doha connects onwards to Europe, Asia and the Americas, which makes a two- or three-night stopover easy to add to a longer trip.

What is there to do in Doha?

Visit the Museum of Islamic Art and the National Museum of Qatar, wander Souq Waqif in the evening, and walk or cycle the Corniche. Explore Katara Cultural Village and The Pearl for galleries, beaches and dining. Then book a half-day desert safari to Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, where dunes run down to the water.

When is the best time to visit Qatar?

November to March is the best time, with warm days and cool evenings that suit the desert and outdoor sightseeing. April and October are hot but manageable. From May to September, daytime temperatures and humidity are extreme, so visits focus on museums, malls and other indoor attractions, with outdoor plans saved for the evening.

Can I do a stopover in Doha?

Yes. If you're flying via Doha to Europe, Asia or beyond, you can break the journey with one or more nights in the city, and stopover hotel packages are widely sold. The airport is close to the centre. You'll still need the right visa for Qatar, so arrange it before you fly rather than at the airport.

What should I wear in Qatar?

Dress modestly in public: cover shoulders and knees in malls, souqs, museums and government buildings, and avoid tight or see-through clothing. Swimwear is fine at hotel pools and beach clubs. Women should cover their hair when visiting mosques. Light, loose cotton clothing is the most comfortable choice in the heat.
