Amboseli National Park

Big-tusked elephants beneath Kilimanjaro

Amboseli is a compact Kenya Wildlife Service park on the Tanzanian border, famous for close-up elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro across its swamps.

Best time to go
June–October and January–February (dry); dawn gives the clearest Kilimanjaro views.
Getting there
From Nairobi: about 4–5 hours by road (≈240 km) or under an hour by air from Wilson. From Mombasa: about 6–7 hours by road, often broken in Tsavo, or roughly 1½ hours by light aircraft.
Ideal for
Families, photographers, elephant lovers and short safaris from Nairobi

Amboseli National Park is where you photograph elephants with Mount Kilimanjaro behind them. It's a compact Kenya Wildlife Service park of just under 400 km² in Kajiado County, on the Tanzanian border. Permanent swamps fed by underground water from Kilimanjaro keep animals here all year, and on a clear morning Africa's highest mountain (5,895 m) fills the southern sky.

Why visit

Amboseli gives you the classic African picture without much effort. The land is flat, the wildlife gathers around the swamps and the drives between sightings are short, which suits families and shorter trips. Its elephants are among the most closely studied in the world. Researchers have followed individual families here since the 1970s, and big-tusked bulls still walk the plains.

What you'll see

  • Large elephant families wading through the swamps
  • Buffalo, hippo and waterbirds in the Enkongo Narok and Longinye swamps
  • Lion, cheetah and spotted hyena on the open plains
  • Wildebeest, zebra, Maasai giraffe and Grant's gazelle
  • The panorama from Observation Hill across swamps, plains and mountain

Best time to visit

The dry seasons, June to October and January to February, are best. Animals concentrate at the swamps and Kilimanjaro is more often clear. Even then, the mountain usually hides in cloud by mid-morning, so dawn and late afternoon are your best chances. The long rains, roughly April and May, turn the plains green and bring quieter roads and lower lodge rates, though some tracks get muddy.

Getting there from Mombasa and Nairobi

From Nairobi: about 240 km, roughly 4–5 hours by road via Emali to the Kimana gate or via Namanga. Light aircraft from Wilson Airport take under an hour.

From Mombasa: a long day's drive of about 6–7 hours up the Mombasa–Nairobi highway. That's why most coast safaris pair Amboseli with Tsavo West or Tsavo East and break the journey there. Scheduled light-aircraft flights from Mombasa and Diani take about 1½ hours.

Good to know

  • Amboseli is one of KWS's premium parks. Fees are charged per person per 24 hours and paid cashless; we normally settle them in advance.
  • Stay in your vehicle except at designated points such as Observation Hill.
  • The dry season is dusty, so bring a scarf or buff and a cover for your camera.
  • Lodges and camps sit both inside the park and in community conservancies around it. Staying in a conservancy puts money directly into local Maasai communities.

Amboseli: your questions

How far is Amboseli from Mombasa?

Amboseli is about 6–7 hours by road from Mombasa, a long day's drive inland along the Mombasa–Nairobi highway. Most safaris from the coast break the trip with a night in Tsavo West or Tsavo East, which turns the drive into part of the safari. Scheduled light-aircraft flights from Mombasa and Diani reach Amboseli in around 1½ hours.

How far is Amboseli from Nairobi?

Amboseli is roughly 240 km from Nairobi, about 4–5 hours by road depending on traffic and your route, either via Emali to the Kimana gate or via Namanga. Light aircraft from Wilson Airport take under an hour, which makes a one- or two-night Amboseli trip realistic even on a long weekend.

Can you see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?

Yes. Amboseli has some of the best views of Mount Kilimanjaro anywhere, even though the mountain itself stands in Tanzania. It's often hidden by cloud by mid-morning, so your best chances are at sunrise and late afternoon, and in the drier months from June to October and January to February. Patience usually pays off over a two-night stay.

When is the best time to visit Amboseli?

The dry seasons, June to October and January to February, are best, because animals concentrate around the swamps and Kilimanjaro is clearer. The long rains around April and May make the park greener and quieter, with lower lodge rates, though some tracks can be muddy. Elephants are present all year, so there's no bad month for them.

How many days do you need in Amboseli?

One or two nights is enough for most travellers. Amboseli is compact, so a full day of morning and afternoon game drives covers the main swamps, Observation Hill and the open plains. Add a night if you're a keen photographer or want time in a community conservancy, or combine Amboseli with Tsavo West for a three- to four-day safari.

Is Amboseli good for a family safari?

Yes. Amboseli is one of the easiest Kenyan parks for families. The roads are flat, wildlife gathers around the swamps so you aren't driving for hours between sightings, and you'll almost certainly see elephants. Many lodges have family rooms and pools for the hot middle of the day, and children pay reduced park fees.
