Diani Beach
Diani is Kenya's best-known beach resort: a long strip of white sand on the South Coast about 30 km from Mombasa, with reef-sheltered water, kitesurfing and easy day trips.
- Best time to go
- December–March (hot, dry, kitesurf season) and July–October (cooler, breezy); April–June is quieter and cheaper.
- Getting there
- From Mombasa airport or the SGR terminus: about 1–1½ hours via the Dongo Kundu bypass. From Nairobi: about an hour's flight to Ukunda (Diani) airstrip, or the SGR to Mombasa plus a road transfer.
- Ideal for
- Families, honeymooners, group getaways, kitesurfers and divers
Diani Beach is Kenya's classic beach holiday: a long run of white sand on the South Coast, about 30 km from Mombasa, with warm water kept calm by an offshore reef. Resorts, villas and small guesthouses line the beach road through Kwale County, backed by coastal forest where colobus monkeys swing over the traffic.
Why visit
Diani suits almost everyone. Families get lagoon swimming and kids' clubs, couples get quiet stretches and sundowners, and groups can take a whole villa. There's plenty to do when you've had enough of the sunbed: kitesurfing, diving, skydiving over the reef and some of the best restaurants on the coast.
What to see and do
- Colobus Conservation, which protects Diani's Angolan colobus monkeys and builds rope "colobridges" over the beach road
- Kaya Kinondo, a sacred Mijikenda forest you can walk with a community guide
- Kitesurfing in the kaskazi (about December–March) and kusi (about June–September) wind seasons
- Shimba Hills National Reserve, under an hour inland, for sable antelope, elephants and Sheldrick Falls
- Wasini Island and Kisite Marine Park for dolphins and snorkelling, about an hour south
- Snorkelling, glass-bottom boats and dhow sunset cruises
Best time to visit
December to March is hot, sunny and dry, the classic beach season. July to October is cooler and breezy, and also very pleasant, though the south-east monsoon can wash seaweed onto parts of the beach mid-year. April to June brings the long rains, with fewer people and the best rates. Kenyan school holidays in April, August and December are the busiest and most expensive weeks.
Getting there from Mombasa and Nairobi
From Mombasa: from Moi International Airport or the SGR terminus at Miritini, the drive takes roughly 1–1½ hours using the Dongo Kundu bypass, which avoids the Likoni ferry. From Mombasa island, the ferry is still the direct route.
From Nairobi: fly direct to Ukunda (Diani) airstrip in about an hour, or take the SGR Madaraka Express to Mombasa and transfer by road. Driving takes around 9–10 hours.
Good to know
- The tide range is big. Swim at mid to high tide and explore rock pools at low tide.
- Book excursions through registered operators, not on the beach.
- Kenya bans plastic carrier bags, so leave them at home.
- Dress modestly away from the beach, and don't feed the monkeys.

Ways to see Diani

Diani: your questions
How far is Diani from Mombasa?
Diani Beach is about 30 km south of Mombasa. From Moi International Airport or the SGR terminus at Miritini, the drive takes roughly 1–1½ hours using the Dongo Kundu bypass, which avoids the Likoni ferry. From Mombasa island and the North Coast, many drivers still use the ferry, so allow extra time at busy hours and on holiday weekends.
What's the best way to get from Nairobi to Diani?
The fastest way is a direct flight from Nairobi to Ukunda airstrip in Diani, which takes about an hour. The SGR Madaraka Express to Mombasa, followed by a road transfer of about an hour via the Dongo Kundu bypass, is the most popular option for families and groups. Driving takes around 9–10 hours, so it's only worth it if you want your car at the coast.
When is the best time to visit Diani Beach?
December to March is the classic beach season: hot, sunny and dry, with strong kitesurfing winds. July to October is cooler and breezy, and also good. April to June brings the long rains, so expect showers, quieter beaches and the best rates. Kenyan school holidays in April, August and December are the busiest and most expensive weeks on the coast.
Is Diani Beach good for families?
Very. The reef keeps the lagoon calm at most tides, many resorts have kids' clubs and family rooms, and outings like Colobus Conservation, a glass-bottom boat or a Wasini dolphin trip suit children well. Check the tide times, though: at low tide the sea pulls back a long way, which is great for rock pools but not for swimming.
Can you see dolphins from Diani?
Yes, on a day trip to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park from Shimoni, about an hour south of Diani. Dolphin sightings are common on these trips, which usually include snorkelling and a seafood lunch on Wasini Island. Sightings are never guaranteed because the dolphins are wild, and calmer seas between about October and March make for the most comfortable boat rides.
Do I still need to use the Likoni ferry to reach Diani?
Not always. Since the Dongo Kundu bypass opened in 2024, traffic from Moi International Airport, the SGR terminus and upcountry can reach Diani without the ferry. If you're starting from Mombasa island or the North Coast, the ferry is still the direct route. It runs around the clock but can have long queues at peak times.
